PAT SAVOLA CONSULTING

Services

I provide a broad range of mindfulness-based services to individuals, groups, and organizations. I work in areas of business, management, career development, education, not-for-profits, and counselling. My chosen emphasis is integrated spirituality. Primarily I work alone, although at times I may work in collaboration with colleagues who bring particular expertise - from Roberts' Rules to environmentally-sensitive building materials!

Geographically, my workplace is Vancouver Island, its associated islands, the Lower Mainland, and coastal areas of British Columbia. It is easy to travel farther afield; two airports and floatplanes are nearby. I have a private practice (counselling and psychotherapy) in Duncan and Courtenay.

My rates are reasonable. I choose work that I like, and that keeps me interested and intellectually stimulated. I know the power of enough. (See Your money or your life: Transforming your relationship with money and achieving financial independence, by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin. 1992. Penguin). Ten percent of my work is pro bono.

Who Am I?

Pat is short for Patricia; I am a bossy, oldest child. I live with my partner of sixteen years, and a foster-cat. I am passionate about my vegetable garden, regardless of what shape it's in (here on the We(s)t Coast, we can garden year-round). I (mostly) like to cook. I'm very fond of Star Trek; it was part of my childhood, and continues to be a source of great metaphors! I play mah jongg (American) weekly.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Forestry (B.S.F.) from the University of British Columbia, and an M.A. (Applied Psychology) from the McGregor School of Antioch University. (For more about integrating forestry and applied psychology, see About the bodhi leaf.) I have an extensive and broad work history: small business, large corporations, union and non-union, federal and provincial governments, university, volunteer organizations, not-for-profit sector, contracts, private practice; itinerant, short-term, and very long term; service, research, agriculture, forestry, mining, business, retail, trades, professional and teaching! I have been counselling since 1983. I started Pat Savola Consulting in 1990. I am a registered member of the B.C. Association of Clinical Counsellors.

My roots are in the women's liberation movement; feminism has been an important way of understanding the world for over twenty years. I have also been involved with people and organizations doing social change work for twenty years. Meditation practice keeps me going.

I have practiced vipassana meditation since 1988 in North America and Asia; I have also spent time doing Dzogchen and Zen practice. I spent a brief period, as is the custom in Burma/Myanmar, ordained as a Buddhist nun. I did mindfulness training in Vancouver with Adrianne Ross, M.D., a student of Jon Kabat-Zinn.

One of my inspirations is a scrap of paper which stares me full in the face when I'm sitting/working/looking out the window at my desk:

What is it that I can do that nobody else is doing that I would like to do that would make a difference?

                                                        -Buckminster Fuller

May all beings be free from suffering.
